Voting Question: I have to put down one of my dogs for viciously attacking another dog...I can't keep him?

11 June 2010, 10:32 pm

My two lab/blue heeler mix brothers got out of our fenced back yard and viciously attacked my neighbors dog while he was chained in their back yard. The owner tried to get my dogs off of her dog because she was so freaked out and one of my dogs then bit her shoulder, badly. My neighbors have been exceedingly kind and understanding but have asked that I get rid of my dogs. I fully understand their position. What is hard now is that Animal Control is involved and will label them "potentially dangerous" and no rescue group will want to take them because of the liability and the biting history. As a dog labeled "potentially dangerous" any owner in Minnesota would have to keep them on a 3 foot leash and muzzled any time they go outside, pay yearIy fees, take out extra home insurance and put them in another room any time anyone other than a family member comes to the house. Now that I know what I know I would never recommend keeping them together because I think they operate on a pack mentality. Kept apart, I don't think either one of them would have done what they did. They have played at dog parks, with my other neighbor's dog and never bitten or attacked them. I am learning that one thing that may of come into play is they were stray pups when someone found them and brought them to The Humane Society. They were a mess and they think they had been fending for themselves for quite awhile. We adopted both because we didn't want to split them up. One has leash aggression, meaning he is afraid of other dogs and sometimes people so he will bark and lunge to keep them away. I never in a million years thought they would have behaved so viciously. I have found a temporary home for one of them in Fargo, North Dakota where all the Minnesota rules will not apply. The other I will have to put down if I don't find a home. My family is sick that we have to put down our goofy lovable dog. Is there anyone in Wisc. or North Dakota that can take Brickie, our second dog, the one with leash aggression and give him a good home?... Read More »
