UPDATE: Red River Begins to Recede; Pressure Strains Levees. The Red River at Fargo peaked at 40.82 feet on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Fargo's main dike protects the city at the 43-foot level. River levels are expected to stay below 41 feet and slowly drop over the next three to seven days, but Fargo resident are being warned not to let their guard down. Officials warn that some levee failures are likely as the record flood waters, approaching snowstorms and wind continue to put extreme pressure on and erode the sandbag dikes along the Red River. Thousands of volunteers are working to fill another 500000 sandbags to reinforce the levees. As many as 30000 people could be left homeless in the northern plains if the river broke through the levees that protect Fargo and Moorehead on the opposite bank in Minnesota. One floodwall protecting a university in the city of Fargo was undermined early on Sunday, swamping the campus. Two deaths and 50 injuries had been reported in flood-related incidents.
